FY26 budget includes $1 million for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to acquire and conserve wetlands throughout the state
For more than 120 years, ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ and its members have been a voice for birds, mobilizing to pass landmark legislation to protect them. As we face the dual crisis of habitat loss and climate change, birds in the Great Lakes region need our help.
Across our region, ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ members have shared their time, passion and stories to improve the chances for vulnerable birds across the Great Lakes region. Thousands of ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ members have joined us for advocacy events, sent letters to decision-makers and met directly with their lawmakers to advocate for bird-friendly policies. ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ Chapters and partners work closely with us on this advocacy and help inspire community members to advocate for Great Lakes birds.
Join ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ Great Lakes as we work in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin to advance bipartisan policy solutions to:
Fund the conservation of critical bird habitats across the Great Lakes region.
The protection and restoration of the Great Lakes and their surrounding habitats is crucial for the well-being of millions of birds, countless other wildlife and more than 40 million people that depend on the Great Lakes for drinking water. ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ Great Lakes works to advance policies that invest in conservation at both the federal and state levels t including federal programs like the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative—the largest source of federal funding to protect and restore the Great Lakes.
Protect Great Lakes freshwater resources.
More than half of the original wetlands in the Great Lakes region have been lost. From the vital wetlands that marsh birds need for habitat, to our rivers, lakes and streams, birds and people all share a need for healthy and clean water. ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ Great Lakes is working to advance state policies to protect wetlands, and safeguard water quality across the region.
Address a changing climate for birds and communities across the Great Lakes region.
From record heat and flooding, the Great Lakes region is already experiencing the impacts of a warming planet. The climate crisis facing birds is urgent and expanding renewable energy is needed to protect birds from climate change. But while we expand renewable energy, we must also prioritize the habitat that birds across the Great Lakes region need. ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ Great Lakes works to advance solar and wind, by engaging with developers and communities to incorporate conservation strategies to secure the best outcomes for birds.
