Conservation in North Carolina

Learn how we protect birds using outreach, restoration, policy, science, and on-the-ground habitat management.

̽»¨¾«Ñ¡â€™s hemispheric approach focuses our work where birds need us most, from boreal Canada to Chile and right here in North Carolina.

In the Tar Heel state, our work stretches from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks. We protect coastal bird sanctuaries that support 40 percent of North Carolina’s nesting waterbirds and manage our Pine Island Sanctuary on Currituck Sound as a refuge and model for coastal resilience. Across communities, we partner with forest managers, landowners, and local chapters to restore habitats, protect tree canopy, and promote native plants. And with trusted partners and more than 50,000 supporters, we advance pragmatic conservation policies that deliver for birds and people.
